Get a bench grinder with a silicon carbide grinding wheel. Dip the tip in water to keep it cool (grind a little; dunk it; repeat until sharp). I couldn't find much for diamond files in hardware stores and the one I tried wasn't very effective. There are some good details here: Sharp Roller Ferrules Make for Better Skiing
